Lucca.....a magical place....you should go

If you haven't been to Tuscany, don't miss Lucca when you go. Surrounded by imposing walls, Lucca has Etruscan origins, even though the most important ruins go back to the Roman period. Lucca is a city quite unique, and in a way, magical. Since early Roman times the historical eras of Lucca are manifested in architectural splendours, invention and modification superimposed on its preceding page in history. The churches of San Michele and San Martino integrate splendidly with the noble palaces built four or five hundred years later.The Roman amphitheatre, superimposed with the ancient market place, blends with the rest of the city.

The pleasure that Lucca provides is not only artistic. The old grocery and pastry shops situated in the via Fillungo offer exquisite local specialities, like buccellata, an anise and raisin bread found only in Lucca. The multitude of wine taverns, trattorias and restaurants testify to the long tradition that the Lucchese have for the pleasures of the table.

Lucca is also famous for the Palio della Balestra (the Crossbow Contest). The national contest is held every 5th year, and the local contest twice a year. The Palio in July is dedicated to San Paolino, while the Palio in September is dedicated to Santa Croce. On this occasion there is a parade in traditional costume along the streets of the city.

We are always looking for new events at the ICD. Maybe the ICD should start a Palio della Ballestra of our own. Of course, we will need volunteers for the apple shot off the head exhibition. Good news is, I think we can guarantee that this is the only event you will ever have to volunteer for in the future. I guess we should check our insurance first.
